Object shot out of sky above Israeli nuclear plant, military says An unidentified flying object was shot down in the skies above Israel's Dimona nuclear plant, pictured here in 2004 Jerusalem (CNN) -- The Israeli Air Force shot down an unidentified flying object over the Dimona nuclear plant in the Negev Desert Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said. The object appeared in a designated no-fly zone, the air force was scrambled and the object was shot down, the IDF said. The object could have been a party balloon, the IDF said, but forces have not yet found the debris to determine what it was. There have been unconfirmed media reports that it was a motor-driven object. The air force reacted according to procedure when the object was spotted, the IDF said. The Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported that last October "IDF warplanes intercepted an Israeli ultralight aircraft that accidentally flew into the area and forced it to land at an airstrip in southern Israel." It also reported that "an Israeli surface-to-air missile downed a crippled Israeli fighter-bomber that strayed into the restricted zone" during the Six Day War in 1967. The craft's pilot was killed. Israel shoots down 'balloon' near nuclear site Israel says one of its fighter planes has shot down what appeared to be an unmanned balloon which had flown over a top-secret nuclear facility. A military spokeswoman said an investigation had been launched into the incident. Israel has designated airspace above the Dimona site in the southern Negev desert a no-fly zone. In October last year an ultralight aircraft was forced to land after it accidentally flew over the area. The spokeswoman said the fighter plane "shot down a suspicious flying object, probably a balloon". Israeli media said the balloon was unmanned but powered by an engine. "It definitely flew over Dimona, although we are still trying to determine what that entailed and the military is now handling the matter," another official said. During the 1967 Mid-East war, an Israeli missile shot downed a crippled Israeli warplane that had strayed into the restricted zone, killing the pilot. The Dimona facility is said to have produced nuclear weapons. Israel neither confirms nor denies having nuclear weapons under its policy of "ambiguity".
