An Anomalous SETI Signal ? Explanation: No one knows for sure what caused this signal. There is a slight possibility that it just might originate from an extraterrestrial intelligence. The bright colors on the blue background indicate that an anomalous signal was received here on Earth by a radio telescope involved in a Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). A search for these signals is ongoing by several groups including volunteer members of the SETI League. Time labels the vertical axis of the above plot, and frequency marks the horizontal axis. Although this strong signal was never positively identified, astronomers have identified in it many attributes characteristic of a more mundane and ultimately terrestrial origin. In this case, a leading possibility is that the signal originates from an unusual modulation between a GPS satellite and an unidentified Earth-based source. Many unusual signals from space remain unidentified. No signal has yet been strong enough or run long enough to be unambiguously identified as originating from an extraterrestrial intelligence. They would need to do some digging on this to determine the origin. They would need to locate the signal again to make sure its really there.
I very much doubt that they would release anything to the public that would imply this was an Alien signal. This would have to go through the Government first.

Yes I was only talking to a friend (or two) about SETI sending out HIGH Priority data to it's SETI@home members to process. The two bits of HP data I got are from May 2010.
So I thought something like this was up.

Seems like some kind of ploy to me, put out taster saying youve got a signal, then try to get more funding from private investors.

Looks like SETI are indeed in need of funding, looks like im right theyve put a taster out saying theyve got a signal to get extra funding Quote: Unfortunately, the Allen Telescope Array may not be able to continue operations beyond mid-April of 2011 unless we receive a much larger infusion of funding. The ATA is an incredible instrument already: the collecting area of a 40m radio telescope, the resolving power of a 300m telescope, the ability to simultaneously scan 4 independent bands across 10GHz of the EM spectrum (other radio telescope designs depend on switching physical receivers to cover that much frequency space in terms of octaves) and a field of view that is up to 5 moon diameters across. If we can finish building the array (from the current 42 antennas to 350), it will have the collecting area of a 112m telescope (like the Green Bank Telescope or GBT), the resolving power of a 2km wide telescope and receivers that operate across 15GHz of bandwidth, retaining a field of view at up to 5 moon diameters across (almost 350 times bigger than the GBT and 17 times bigger than the VLA) and with receiver performance matching that of the best radio receivers in the world. |
