High school children cause UFO sighting excitement in Utah Washington - UFO sighting excitement swept through the city of Washington Terrace, northern Utah, on October 1, when strange lights, which looked like lights of crafts flying in stealthy silence, appeared in the evening sky. According to MSNBC, excitement in the city over the sighting peaked after police, called to investigate the strange flying lights, said the local Air Force Base had not launched any experimental crafts and could offer no scientific explanation of the flying lights. The strange lights, described as glowing "fiery red," and traveling at about 70 mph, were first seen at about 11:30 p.m. Traffic stopped, people thronged the streets, gawking, and taking photographs. Locals soon solved the mystery of the flying stealth lights when information passed around that students at a local school, the Bonneville High School, after seeing the movie Tangled, got the idea of launching lanterns made of lightweight paper and candle. The school's vice president Gage Marberger, explained to the local media that the students had not intended to fool anyone but were inspired by a scene in the movie which showed hundreds of lit Chinese lanterns floating in the sky. The students launched about 16 lanterns. Marberger explained that the kids were only having fun. The MSNBC report remarks on how easy it is for man-made objects to be mistaken for extraterrestrial crafts, especially in an evening sky, or in conditions of poor visibility. Recently, ABQJournal reported excitement sweeping through Albuquerque, New Mexico, at sighting of a UFO, the size of an entire two-story building which soared in the sky in the presence of thousands of excited viewers. The local TV weatherman finally identified the UFO as a weather balloon launched from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Fort Sumner. The National Weather service said the balloon was inflated to its massive size as it gained altitude. ABQJournal, however, notes the tendency of UFO enthusiasts to remain skeptical of reasonable explanations of UFO sightings by relevant authorities. The Roswell UFO incident of 1947, in which UFO enthusiasts claimed a UFO sighting, but U.S. military authorities, under controversial circumstances, declared the UFO a weather balloon, remains the favorite reference for those who prefer extraterrestrial source explanations of UFOs. First of all, I would like to know what type of candle can remain lit in 70mph wind. Secondly, I once lived in Albuquerque and there is NO way a balloon launched in Ft. Sumner can be seen from Albuquerque. Albuquerque sits down in the Rio Grande Valley with the Sandia and Manzano Mountains to the east. And Ft. Sumner is 140 miles to the east of Albuquerque. Plus the prevalent winds travel from west to east in that area pushing a balloon eastward and probably reaches altitude by the time it is over eastern Oklahoma.

What if that balloon like the article says is the size of a two story building, I believe that it would be able to be seen over that distance but the conditions would have to be excellent.

If there was a photo or a short clip then you say ah there's something to this, it's harder just to believe someone's view.

The distance between Albuquerque and Ft. Sumner is too great for a balloon that is launched from Ft. Sumner to appear to be as large as a two story building to someone in Albuquerque. For that to happen the balloon would have to probably be 50 miles tall. When I lived in Albuquerque I saw balloons launched from White Sands that is to the south about the same distance away and they looked like a very bright Jupiter, but about three times as large. It is impossible for someone standing in a valley at the base of a 10,000 foot high mounntain range to the east to see something launched 140 miles to the east that travels to the east.

The reference to size of a two story building is in the article. Is it possible that the balloon drifted over Albuquerque ? The article just says that it was launched from FT Summer.

Let me put it a different way; Imaging standing at the base of a wall 6,000 feet tall and 100 miles wide. How far can one see on the other side? This is the problem I have with a report that states that a ballon launched 140 miles on the other side of that wall can be seen by a person standing at the base of that wall on the opposite side. Funny we should be debating ANOTHER balloon issue that occured in New Mexico.

I understand what your saying, what Im trying to say is what if the balloon had drifted over Albuquerque and the person was looking straight up at it. Yeah balloons seem to be all the rage in New Mexico LOL

No, the balloon could have not traveled west as the wind patterns in that area travel from west to east, blowing the balloon to the east, away from Albuquerque. And I wish those LGM's(Little Green men) would stop flying balloons and get back in their flying saucers!!

There's not a great deal to go off, in the article you would have thought someone would have took a video or photo
