Witness Background
A couple of years ago I received an email from an aging pilot, who for confidential reasons, is known publicly by only his initials - ETW. He appeared to be a very sincere man who simply wanted to make his story known for the first time.
In 1947, he was a member of the US Air Force, and he made an official report through proper channels to the Operations Section at Travis Air Force Base. He reported the sighting of nine flying discs over the state of Utah.
Our witness was the Aircraft Distribution Officer of the Far East Air Materiel Command located in Fuchu, Japan in 1947. His project was to transport a B-17 to Middletown Air Depot in Pennsylvania, to have it modified to be an air rescue craft.
The Salt Flats
After completing the first leg of his trip, he was on a flight back to Japan, and positioned in the nose section of the aircraft. The plane was approaching Promontory Point, Utah, on July 17, 1947, at about 15:30 hours, when he saw several unknown objects rising from the Salt Flats.
The unknown craft were moving fast toward the B-17, and the crew became worried. Soon, however, they veered to the B-17's left, yet they were still close enough for ETW to count nine flying discs without a problem.
The UFOs were from 40-60 feet in diameter, and had light blue underbellies. They were flying in formation of three groups of three in a V-shape. Our witness and the flight engineer were the first to see them, and they quickly alerted the pilot.
The flight engineer added one thing to the sighting - he stated that the top of the discs was a sand color. Our witness had been in the Philippines for about 18 months, and had not yet heard about the Arnold sighting nor the Roswell case.
Records Still Available
Our witness, still to this day, keeps a copy of the information of the sighting on a piece of paper in his wallet, and also has a copy of his observations in a locked, safety box in his home.
1947 was a landmark year in UFO reports, and it is sad that because of the notoriety of the Roswell and Kenneth Arnold cases, other important reports are neglected. Hopefully, this will help that cause.
