July 1971 ; Everything was normal as my family and I were traveling from our hometown on the way to our annual family fishing vacation. As we were motoring through northern Nevada, via I-80 on the way into Idaho, it was around 2:30 a.m. and all of us were sleeping and my dad was driving when my dad, Steve yelled out for my mom, Jean to wake up, while he applied hard braking, but not to hard because we had a 35 foot trailer. As my dad pulled to the shoulder, the bumps woke myself and 2 brothers up. Immediately, my dad jumped out of the truck and was looking up and my mom was screaming, " what the hell is that Steve " and for us kids to stay in the truck. We 3 boys were looking where my mom and dad were looking and saw this huge, bright yellow object in the sky that actually lit the area up like it was daybreak. At first we all thought that it was just a huge meteor until it stopped in mid flight, hovered for maybe 30 seconds, then like a streak in the sky went back in the same direction that it was traveling. Went a little ways, then back towards us. In what I think was maybe 5 seconds it was over us and hovering. By this time, my mom was screaming and yelling at my dad for us to get out of there. My mom was crying, screaming at us boys to get down in the seat and keep our heads down. There was no traffic anywhere to be seen in any direction. It was hard to tell distances because it was pitch black outside, and mountains were all around us. You could make out the mountains were there from the light from this object, but unable to tell exactly how close this thing came to us. I kept watching, because I thought it was the coolest thing that I ever did see. As it seemed to be hovering close by and almost directly above, it hovered there for what was 10-15 seconds, then it was gone, disappeared southward away from us in a blink of the eye. Both my mom and dad were shaken by this. It all happened in maybe 1 minute or so and all of our lives had changed. About 20 miles further on the highway, we pulled into a rest stop because my dad did not want to drive any more. After we all slept, and then got back onto the road 6 hours later, my mom made us 3 boys swear to them that we would never speak of this to anyone, ever. We all promised. You see, both of my parents were pretty high ranking with the state of California. My mom was a director of the finance department, and she was a C.P.A., and my dad was a battalion fire chief. So this was the understanding because both of my parents could, would lose their respective jobs. So none of us ever talked about it to anyone, until they both retired from the state, almost 20 years later. Since, I, or anyone else in my family had no other experience. I have and always will believe that there definitely is life out there, other than human. It remains as vivid in my mind now, as it was back in 1971. The trout fishing was fantastic also, when I was not looking up at the sky.
