Strange Lights Over The Freeway Idaho
When you live in Mud Lake, Idaho it means you have to drive long distances to get anywhere. Going grocery shopping, to the doctor, or on a date night means a trip of close to 50 miles just to get "to town." The locals all know that going "to town" means a drive into the City of Idaho Falls.
For many years that trip was taken on a dirt road. In the 1950's it became a narrow two lane road snaking through the Snake River valley. Finally, in the early 1970's we hit the big time. They built the Interstate 15 freeway through southeastern Idaho. You can travel from San Diego, California through Las Vegas, continuing throughout the states of Utah, Idaho, and Montana and on into Alberta, Canada on Interstate 15. In my opinion the 196 miles through Idaho is one of the prettiest stretches of road as it travels alongside the Snake River through farming communities and small towns.
It was our practice as a young married couple to go "to town" every Saturday night on a date. My husband was a dairy farmer which meant that we couldn't leave until after the evening milking was completed and so it was usually around 9:00 pm before we left Mud Lake heading south on I-15.
Those evenings were usually spent talking and catching up with each other without our three kids interrupting us constantly. One night in late October we were driving to Idaho Falls for our traditional date which included a show and dinner when I noticed a very bright light hovering above the freeway just south of the small farming town of Roberts.
West of Idaho Falls in a vast lonely desert is the largest nuclear facility in the United States. Strange lights and sightings were a common occurrence in this area. I had always had a fascination with the UFO sitings that were reported but had never been lucky enough to see one.
As we continued to travel south that late night, we were fascinated by the light emanating from what looked like a large oval shaped aircraft. I begged my husband to stop the car so I could get a really good look. His reaction was simply, "Are you kidding me?" In fact, he decided that he should speed up the car!
I was craning my neck to see the object as well as I could through the windshield as the light continued to shine down on the freeway just ahead. I had heard of experiences where people were traveling on dark, lonely roads in the middle of the night when their car stopped and then they couldn't remember a thing but they had lost hours. Would this happen to us? My heart was racing as fast as the car. The conditions were just right; no other vehicles in site, a long, dark lonely stretch of road late at night, and strange lights in the sky.
Just as we were driving into the pool of light shining on the road, it seemed to disappear! I then convinced my husband to stop so I look for the lights. I jumped out of the car while dear hubby was asking if I had lost my mind. He finally got out of the car when I told him the unidentified object that had been in the sky seemly had vanished. There were no lights to be seen. After a few disappointing minutes spent hoping to see it again we decided it was time to go but we had probably just witnessed our first unidentified flying object.
Was the strange object with the bright lights a test craft from the Idaho Nuclear Energy Laboratory or the Air Force base located a couple of hundred miles away, or perhaps was it something from outer space? I like to think that it was the latter choice because a couple of years later a large round crop circle mysteriously appeared in the middle of one of our hay fields!
Now every time we go "to town" I look for bright lights shining on the road ahead. What better place to check out the human race on Earth? You don't get much more "normal" than southeastern Idaho!
