The Cornish Owlman
The Cornish Owlman is one of the lesser known cryptoids in the field of cryptozoology. Also called the "Death Raptor", the Cornish Owlman has only appeared in one specific place for a short period of time. There have very few sightings since 1978 unlike most cryptoids, there is no body of mythology to go along with it.
The majority of the Cornish Owlman sights were reported between the years of 1976 and 1978 in the county of Cornwall in England. All reports claim the creature was spotted in the vicinity of Mawnan Church.
In the spring of 1976, some strange things were happening in Cornwall. The weather was going through some extreme shifts between unusual heat waves and cold spells. Animals were behaving strangely. There were several reports of dogs, cats, and birds terrorizing people. There was also an increase in the number of UFO's reported.
The first sighting of the Cornish Owlman took place on April 17, 1976. June and Vicky Melling claimed to see a large "bird man" hovering over the steeple of Mawnan Church. The sighting shook the girls so much that the family cut their vacation three days short.
On July 3, 1976, Sally Chapman and Barbara Perry were camping in the woods near Mawnan Church when Chapman claims that she heard a hissing sound. She turned to see a figure that looked like an owl, but was as big as a man with pointed ears and red eyes. She then reported the Cornish Owlman flew up in the air, revealing black pincher-like claws.
Jane Greenwood reported sighting the Cornish Owlman the following day. It was also sighted on three unnamed French girls on August 2, 1978 who claimed the creature was a furry bird with a gaping mouth and wide eyes.
Many of the sightings were reported to cryptozoologist, Tony "Doc" Shiels, who coined the name "Owlman". Eyewitnesses claim the creature is a partially feathered man-sized owl with pointed ears and clawed feet. It was described as silvery-grey in color with slanting eyes. It's said the creature makes a hissing or screeching sound. Some witnesses also claim it had glowing red eyes. Most sightings of the cryptoid claim the creature was flying and that the wingspan was about ten feet.
Skeptics point out that the Cornish Owlman could be the result of mass hysteria. Strange things were happening and people were on edge. Other skeptics claim the Cornish Owlman may have been a misidentified avian species that escaped.
Others say there was something in Cornwall at that time. It could have been some strange form of Earth energy or other power. Others say the creature was either an alien visitor passing through or an alien pet that somehow escaped.
Sightings of the Cornish Owlman have been linked to the more famous West Virginia Mothman. What was this strange creature? With scarce sightings since 1978, it is unlikely we will ever find out for sure.
