UFO sightings are on the rise

A READER contacted me in January and asked if I could recall a UFO sighting in the Jarrow area roughly 30 years ago, involving a 'silver mystery light'.
I've had such a backlog of stories to work on recently it's taken me a while to look into the matter, but I've eventually managed to track down the tale.
On Wednesday, August 1, 1979, a resident of Barnard Grove was sitting in her lounge just before lunchtime watching TV.
She happened to glance out of the window and was astonished to see a silver sphere drifting across her field of vision.
Later, the woman told reporters that it looked something like a football – which it wasn't, of course.
Dumbfounded, she watched as the sphere drifted in a southerly direction towards Sunderland at an extremely low trajectory.
The sphere was still visible, although steadily receding into the distance. It emitted no noise or light, and was simply, as the witness described, a silver ball.
UFO witnesses are often reluctant to come forward and identify themselves due to the fact that their encounters are usually met with deep scepticism or, worse, howls of derision.
To be honest, I think it's the sceptics who have the problem.
Just because something doesn't fit into their neat, orderly vision of the universe and everything in it, they often resort to character assassination or abuse in an effort to prevent themselves having to consider the unthinkable.
The UFO phenomenon is one of our most perplexing mysteries, and it simply won't do to dismiss the thousands of sightings that are reported every year as hoaxes, hallucinations or 'misattributions'.
The fact is that our skies are continually being invaded by aircraft of unknown provenance, and we simply haven't a clue as to why they're here or what they're up to.
In July, a new magazine is to be launched called UFO Matrix, and, along with stalwarts in the field, such as editor Philip Mantle and the MoD's one-time UFO expert, Nick Pope, I'll be writing a regular column in which I'll be taking a look at some 'cold cases' that were never actually solved.
Does the Government know more about the UFO phenomenon than it's letting on? I'm sure it does.
The big question is whether ministers will actually admit to it and tell us what they've uncovered. I'd love to think so, but I'm not holding my breath.
There's little doubt that, from their perspective, they have a very good reason for keeping quiet.
To announce publicly that we are indeed being visited by extraterrestrial life forms would, as one US president is alleged to have said, "destabilise our society". They could be right.
The simple fact is, though, that they can't keep a lid on things forever.
At some point our leaders are going to have to bite the proverbial bullet and tell us what we already know deep down – UFOs really do exist, and we're going to have to get used to the fact.
There has been a sudden resurgence in sightings recently, and silver spheres, like the one seen by the resident of Barnard Grove three decades ago, are once again making the news.
