A video making the rounds this week has to do with a explosion seen via a telescope in the sky... Appears to be a weather balloon.... Balloons are launched at US National Weather Service Tampa Bay Florida at 7am and 7pm EDT each day. Hundreds of balloons are released at the same time all over the world. Data from the balloons becomes the foundation of all weather forecasting . The balloons rise at 1000 feet per minute and shatter at around 100,000 feet, or about 20 miles high. At that elevation, they have stretched to the size of a 2 story house. This balloon was released at 7pm on 7/2/12 and shattered at about 8:47pm at 105,840 feet high. The video is shot through my telescope at 113 power using a digital Kodak camera. The balloon is falling down not sideways. The camera housing and mount prevented correct up and down alignment on the scope. Tampa Bay Weather Balloon Shatters video below..
