A European Union lawmaker says governments should stop covering up information about UFOs and let the public know the truth.
Mario Borghezio, an Italian member of the European parliament, says the EU should have its own X-files center where anyone can look at the information gathered on unexplained sightings in the sky.
Borghezio is seeking the support of other lawmakers from the 736-member assembly for a statement calling on governments to act. So far he has collected only a couple dozen signatures supporting his measure, but he says his colleagues will come around.
Opening the files is not unprecedented: Last year, Britain published 4,000 pages online on 800 alleged encounters with aliens during the 1980s and 1990s. And over the past three years, the British Defense Ministry has been gradually releasing previously secret UFO papers after facing Freedom of Information demands.
Massimo Teodorani, an astrophysicist long active in UFO circles who backs Borgehezio in his request, urged lawmakers to grant him and other experts access to the data.
"We can expand our scientific knowledge very quickly, so this is important for mainstream science," he said.
Teodorani said he neither believes in alien encounters nor rules them out, but insists the secret files would prove it once and for all.
